Candle Care
Taking proper care of your candles can enhance their lifespan, ensure they burn evenly, and minimize safety hazards.
Here are some key candle care steps:
-
Trim the Wick: Before each use, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm). This helps prevent soot and provides a cleaner, more even burn.
-
Burn for an Appropriate Time: The first time you light the candle, let it burn long enough for the entire surface to become liquid wax. This helps prevent tunneling and ensures an even burn in future uses.
-
Avoid Drafts: Place your candle away from drafts, vents, or fans. Drafts can cause uneven burning, soot, and even rapid burning.
-
Keep the Wax Pool Clean: Ensure the melted wax is free from debris such as wick trimmings, matches, or dust. This keeps the candle burning evenly and safely.
-
Use a Candle Snuffer: Use a snuffer to extinguish the candle instead of blowing it out. This helps prevent wax splatter and minimizes smoke.
- Store Properly: Store candles in a cool, dark place to prevent color fading, melting, or changes in fragrance. Keep them out of direct sunlight and avoid storing them in temperatures that exceed 85°F (29°C).
-
Don't Burn for Too Long: Avoid burning candles for more than 3-4 hours at a time. Extended burning can cause the wick to mushroom or soot to form.
-
Follow Safety Guidelines: Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep candles out of reach of children and pets, and always place them on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
-
Extinguish Properly: Always double-check that the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room to ensure it’s fully extinguished.
-
Dispose of Candles Safely: When there’s about 1/2 inch (12 mm) of wax left at the bottom of the container, discontinue use to prevent heat damage to the surface beneath the candle.
By following these steps, you can enjoy your candles safely and prolong their life.
